At the POLiS (Post Lithium Energy Storage) Cluster of Excellence, researchers develop the scientific foundations of sustainable post-lithium energy storage through interdisciplinary research across chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering and data science.

Why POLiS?

Batteries have become one of the key technologies of the 21st century. They power portable electronics, enable electric mobility and are essential for integrating renewable energy into future power systems. As demand for energy storage continues to grow, tomorrow’s batteries must go beyond the capabilities of today’s lithium-ion technology.

Meeting this challenge requires more than incremental improvements. It calls for entirely new electrochemical concepts, a deeper understanding of fundamental processes and innovative approaches to materials discovery. POLiS addresses these scientific questions to lay the foundations for the next generation of sustainable energy storage.
