Podcast: Has India Reached Its Energy Transition Goal 5 YEARS EARLY?

Today we’re taking a look at a country that’s charting its own unique course when it comes to the energy transition and electric mobility. Our podcast guest, Dr. Rainer Kern (Panitek Green Ventures), gives us an inside look at an exotic energy market that’s currently undergoing rapid change: India!

India has already achieved its 2030 energy transition target – five years ahead of schedule (2026)! The plan was for 50% of its installed electricity capacity to come from renewable energy sources. Today, the share of green power generators (wind, hydro, solar, etc.) has actually risen to over 54 percent. But India’s real feat is yet to come: electricity demand continues to grow tremendously. The IEA expects more than 570 additional TWh of annual electricity consumption by 2030. Solar and wind power will be key to this (€0.02/kWh) and are already significantly cheaper in new projects than coal-fired power generation (€0.05/kWh), which is still widely used.

India’s transportation transition is getting incredibly interesting! Electric two-wheelers (e-bikes) and tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws) are currently taking over India’s roads! Small vehicles with small batteries, but in huge numbers! The IEA sees enormous potential for electrification in India’s two- and three-wheeled vehicles: By 2030, nearly half of all two- and three-wheeled vehicles sold could be electric—and if the announced ambitions are realized, the figure could even exceed 60%.
