Podcast: Home Storage Becomes an Electricity Supplier
A PV storage system that draws electricity from the grid at night, deliberately leaves room for solar power at midday, and might even sell electricity in the evening? What sounds counterintuitive at first could soon become the norm for home storage systems. Until now, most home storage systems have had one primary function: to store the solar power generated at midday for use in the evening hours. But this role is undergoing a fundamental change. In the future, smart battery storage systems will take advantage of electricity prices, participate in the electricity market, relieve the local power grid, and be controlled in conjunction with heat pumps and electric cars.
How does this work in practice? And is it even worth it for owners?
Dr. Andreas Piepenbrink, CEO of E3/DC, uses concrete examples to explain why a battery sometimes intentionally does not charge, how it can benefit from dynamic electricity rates and grid fees, and what opportunities the new MiSpeL regulation opens up. But we’ll also discuss the downsides: conversion losses, accelerated battery aging, the slow rollout of smart meters, and the risk that hundreds of thousands of batteries could charge simultaneously, overloading local power grids.
