POLiS Seminar | Dr. Simon Daubner

In July, POLiS alumnus Dr. Simon Daubner from the Imperial College London will give a talk in the POLiS Seminar.

The title of his talk will be "Simulate, Innovate, Design: The Role of Modelling in Shaping Tomorrow’s Batteries".

Abstract:

Rechargeable batteries are at the heart of modern energy technologies, powering everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. However, designing new batteries for specific applications remains a significant challenge due to the complex interplay of electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical processes across scales. Even though lithium-ion batteries are fairly well understood, breakthroughs like solid-state batteries require fundamentally new approaches.

In this talk, we’ll take a journey from the basic principles of battery operation to the cutting-edge modelling and simulation techniques that are reshaping the way we understand and design batteries. I’ll discuss how GPU-accelerated solvers and optimization methods are enabling faster and more detailed simulations, and how large language models (LLMs) could act as AI agents to navigate vast parameter spaces and streamline complex research workflows. These emerging tools provide a glimpse into the future of (energy) materials research.
